Step-by-Step Instructions
Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints were a very popular way of mass printing texts and pictures in Japan. Below you will find information on how they are created.
Step 1:Sketch the image you would like to be printed on a piece of paper, or directly onto the piece of wood you will be carving from.
Step 3:Carve the sketch out of the piece of wood. Make sure it complimentary/ reflected to the original print, so it does not come out backwards on the final print
Step 5:
Lay a piece of paper on the painted woodblock and line up the corners to ensure that the print doesn't come out lopsided.

Step 2:(Skip this step if the image was drawn on directly to the piece of wood) Glue the sketch face down on the piece of wood, usually a cherry blossom wood plank.
Step 4:Put ink onto the carved wooden block. Paint the block the way you want using the colors in the spots you want them to appear on the finished print.
Step 6:Press the paper down, and then peel the paper off. Add any other details you want using other materials or paints. Allow it to dry.
